I'm looking at the software orders for next year and have been remembering a few good 'free' bits and bobs which would do the job just fine.
Here are some I think you may find useful too:
1. Freeplane - http://freeplane.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Freeplane is open source Mind Mapping software. It just seems to get better and better over time. The maps can contain icons and pictures and can be turned into webpages which can then become interactive, containing links and collapsible sections.
2. VLC Media Player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
I'm sure we all already use VLC to playback videos. VLC gets around having to search for those nasty codecs and wondering whether video clips will play or not.
3. Serif Draw Plus - http://www.serif.com/free-graphic-design-software/
This is a piece of software which is new to me but looks very promising. A powerful graphic design program for all your digital drawing and editing needs.
4. Hot Potatoes - http://hotpot.uvic.ca/
An old favourite, with Hot Potatoes you can create online quizzes and other activities like crosswords, cloze activities, word matching etc. Upload the activities onto the VLE (Moodle) and your students can complete them OR get the students to make their own as a revision task! Crosswords can be printed out if you would rather then did them on paper. Moodle should record a score if your students have taken a test posted there.
5. Wink by Debugmode - http://www.debugmode.com/wink/
To be fair this is probably more useful for ICT teachers, HOWEVER if you have need for demonstrating something on your computer and then recording it for students, you might find this very useful. Wink turns your desktop "Screencast" into shockwave flash which can then be played inside a browser. You can add narration, speech bubbles and navigation too. A powerful, free program.
